A total of 393 seabird colonies were identified along the Oregon coast in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane, Coos, and Curry Counties, Oregon. Current and historical information on colony locations and estimates of breeding seabirds were compiled into databases for all known seabird colonies in Oregon. This data set represents point locations for all of Oregon's seabird colonies with associated attribute information. The attribute information includes counts of nests and birds, where available, and estimates of the number of breeding birds for each species at a colony. Specific information regarding date, observers, type of survey, quality of the estimate, and source of the data are also provided for each record. For linear onshore colonies, the location is described by the center point. For groups of offshore rocks and islands, the location is described by the centroid of the digitized group boundary. For offshore colonies, the location is described by the centroid of the digitized rock or island. For complexes, the location is described by the centroid of the digitized complex boundary. USGS 1:24,000 Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) and (Digital Orthographic Quandrangles) DOQs were used as references. The primary source for this data is:
Naughton, M. B., D. S. Pitkin, R. W. Lowe, K. J. So, and C. S. Strong. 2007. Catalog of Oregon seabird colonies. U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Biological Technical Publication FWS/BTP-R1009-2007, Washington, D.C.
<purpose>The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of Oregon's seabird colonies for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is expected that data will be replaced as more recent and accurate information is collected.</purpose>
<supplinf>The original data from the USFWS was in a geodatabase. At NOAA Fisheries (Portland office) the table called 'MRA_052008' from USFWS' geodatabase was plotted as points using the x, y coordinates. The resultant shapefile was reprojected into Albers Conical Equal Areal projection, NAD 83.</supplinf>

<attrlabl>QUAL</attrlabl>
<attrdef>Data quality, The code describes how accurately the census data reflects the actual number of each species in the colony. Data quality may vary depending on census consitions, biology of the species, etc. Usually a 1= precise count for nest counts, or a 3= counts of birds, approximate because non-breeders/ variable mate attendance make breeding population inexact (murres, guillemots). Occasionally poor slide quality / incomplete coverage can result in a '2' for air surveys, or an in-colony nest count of guillemots, oystercatchers results in a '1' quality. Though entered from data sheets as quality 3, aerial murre surveys may best be represented as quality 2. These codes are the same as those used for the Beringian Seabird Colony Catalog.</attrdef>

<attrdomv>
<edom>
<edomv>1</edomv>
<edomvd>cata in "Number of Birds" are a precise estimate of the colony population. Moderate changes amoung years could probably be detected. Examples: (a) exact counts of breeding pairs or nests (kittiwakes, gulls, terns, cormorants); (b) counts of individuals adjusted carefully for nest attendance.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>2</edomv>
<edomvd>Data in "Number of Birds" are a good estimate of the colony population. Large changes in numbers could probably be detected. Examples: (a) exacts counts of birds, where all are visible (e.g., murres, kittiwakes, gulls, terns); (b) counts of guillemots on an early morning high tide before nesting; (c) counts of occupied burrows in a precisely-measured area.</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>3</edomv>
<edomvd>The data in "Numbers of birds" are only a rough estimate of the colony population. Only very large changes in populations can be detected. Examples: (a) many counts of part of a colony; (b) exact counts of birds that nest underground e.g., puffins, guillemots), except special studies where all birds were visible; (c) most counts of birds by groups rather than individually. (Note: Data quality 3 is much lower than Data Quality 1 and 2).</edomvd>
</edom>
<edom>
<edomv>4</edomv>
<edomvd>The data in "Number of birds" are completely unreliable to indicate the colony population. These data should not be used to infer any changes in population, however large. Examples: 9a) estimates under poor conditions; (b) estimates that were mostly non-breeding birds; (c) all non-numeric estimates ("Present", "Rare", etc.).</edomvd>
